Andreas Kilbinger went to school in Mainz (Germany), received his Diploma in chemistry from the Free University of Berlin in 1996, carried out his PhD work at the University of Durham (UK, 1996-1999) and the worked as a postdoctoral fellow with an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship at Caltech (USA, 2000-2002) in the group of Robert H. Grubbs. He received the Habilitation (venia legendi) in 2007 from the University of Mainz (Germany) and moved to Fribourg as a professor for polymer chemistry in 2010.
The Kilbinger Group is interested in developing new synthetic methods for the preparation of precision polymers. The group is divided into two sub-groups, one working on aromatic amide polymers and the other on olefin metathesis chemistry. Aromatic amide polymers and oligomers are useful building blocks for supramolecular polymer chemistry. Their shape-persistence allows the exact placement of functional groups in space. We are currently using such oligomers and polymers for the construction of tube-like polymeric helices.
The ring opening metathesis polymerization using ruthenium carbene complexes is a living polymerization technique that requires stoichiometric amounts of transition metal complex with respect to the number of polymer chains generated. We have recently developed a new living polymerization method that only requires a fraction of the transition metal complex compared to previous methods thus rendering the entire procedure catalytic. This new synthesis method is currently being developed further in our research group.
