Thermo-econophysics?

posted by JRHulls's pictureJRHulls, 26 May 2012

Maybe what is needed is a reall hard look at a fatal flaw of conventional economics, which is their ardent refusal to deal with the thermodynamics of economic growth.  Tom Murphy, of the UCSD Physics department has made an excellent start on this new field.  Here's a link to his calculations on energy and economic growth....
The kink in the US GDP curve

posted by JRHulls's pictureJRHulls, 17 April 2012

The kink in the US GDP curve and the current recovery looks like it could be treated as a divergence that could be looked at in terms of control theory, analyzed as a feeedback control loop, or the classic proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller....

Dear Colleagues, let us fix the 'government' by weening them off of the 'geek'

posted by Anonymous (not verified), 14 April 2012

I am a frequent user of the econophysics forum...I was recently looking at the opportunities and news web pages of unifr.ch/econophysics when I noticed the call for papers 'to fix the government, call in the geeks' ...I have a very simple observation to make and one I think most of you will agree with...If scientists in quantitative economics wish the 'government' to take the science seriously ...

..., all that remains is to put the ms on a CD and send it to Cambridge. The book was actually due in Oct. 2010 but I got two extensions. I develop Ito and Fokker-Planck methods parallel to each other, both are used in the text, which has exercises at the end of each chapter. The exercises were developed since 2005 while teaching my econophysics course semi-annually at UH....
Importing the Workers' Paradise to Europe

The Euro

posted by jmccauley's picturejmccauley, 05 December 2011

As I've written before, the Euro can't be saved. In the U.S. (and probably in the Swiss Confederation) states cannot run practice deficit spending because deficit spending is tantamount to money creation. Ony the Federal Gov't. can print money, not the states. In the E.U., in contrast, any participating country can run a deficit....

How the Euro and Dollar differ, and why the Euro will fail

posted by jmccauley's picturejmccauley, 24 July 2011

In the U.S. only the federal government can print money. Running a deficit is a way of printing money. If a state (California, Kentucky, Texas, e.g.) runs a deficit then by law spending must be cut and taxes increased. Not so in the EU. There, a mamber country has only a toothless threat hanging over it against running a deficit, the threat is obvioiusly not effective....
