The Human Right to a Healthy Environment?

In 2015, the United Nations finally created the role of a Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment. John Knox has filled this role with great energy and enthusiasm. However, one of the obstacles to progress is the lack of a globally recognized human right to a healthy environment. True, a healthy environment is necessary for human well-being and for the fulfilment of other human rights. But should international law also explicitly recognize a human right to a healthy environment? John Knox will present arguments for this step as he approaches the end of his 3-year term as Special Rapporteur. He will also discuss what this new human right would require of states and of businesses.

John Knox is the Henry C. Lauerman Professor of International Law at Wake Forest University, in North Carolina, where he teaches and writes on human rights law, environmental law, and their relationship with one another.
