    Description

    Transnational Childhoods

Children are on the move. Around the world, many children and young people are migrating with their families to find better life opportunities, escaping from war, poverty, or environmental catastrophes. Some children may travel alone, as unaccompanied minors. Others may stay behind, receiving transnational support from parents who are abroad. In this seminar, we will address how migration affects the life of children from different angles – as first-, second-, and third-generation migrants, as refugees, as unaccompanied minors, and as ‘left behind’ – creating experiences of transnational childhoods.

    Training objectives

After attending this seminar, you will:

    • Gain an overview of how migration may create different experiences of childhood.
    • Acquire knowledge about children’s experiences as first-, second-, and third-generation and the question of return migration.
    • Acquire knowledge about children’s experiences as refugees and unaccompanied minors.
    • Understand how migration may impact children’s lives even when they do not migrate themselves as in the case of ‘left-behind’ children.
    • Combine theoretical and empirical approaches by learning with migrant researchers and their Ph.D. projects.
