TCF - Test de connaissance du français
The Language Centre of the University of Fribourg is an examination centre for the TCF - Test de connaissance du français. The TCF, an accredited examination of the French Ministry of Education, is a French language proficiency examination for non-native speakers of French, including persons not registered at the university, who wish to have their level of proficiency evaluated and certified for professional, academic or personal reasons.
Test types and exam fees
- Compulsory examinations on computer: approximately 90 minutes
- Listening (CO)
- Proficiency in language structures (SL)
- Reading (CE)
- Optional examinations
- Speaking (EO) 12 minutes
- Writing (EE) 60 minutes

TCF for candidates with a disability
The person overseeing the exam session has detailed instructions for all types of disability. This person is also able to ensure that disabled candidates have proper conditions in which to write.
A Braille version of the TCF is available for all testing centres that have announced a non-sighted candidate.
Please notify your testing centre of your situation as soon as possible so that they can make the necessary arrangements.

Equivalents for TCF pour le Québec
The Québec government accepts the Tout public option of the TCF with the Speaking component for immigration applications. At the current time, there is no officially required exit level for these exams. Le Québec government evaluates an immigration candidate’s language level (and remaining application) according to a grid of criteria.
Equivalents for TCF pour l’accès à la nationalité française
The French government accepts the Tout public option of the TCF with the Speaking component for French citizenship applications, with two requirements:
- for Listening, at least 300 points (level B1) are required
- for Speaking, at least 6 out of 20 points (level B1) are required
As proof of language ability, candidates can also provide DELF B1, DELF B2, DALF C1 oder DALF C2 language exam certificates.
