Journalisme

To have seen something with one’s own eyes – at least for people whose perception is not clouded by drugs or delusions – was considered the litmus test for reality and truth. In the age of embellished realities, manipulated photos and videos, however, the question arises whether we still can trust our own eyes. Thanks to image editing software and artificial intelligence, sound, images and videos can now be manipulated in an almost invisible way. Whether it’s reality being reproduced or something artificial being constructed can hardly be discerned any more. The interdisciplinary study will assess the effects of digital manipulation of sound, image and video material as well as deepfakes.

  • Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe: Switzerland
    • Project team: Daniel Beck, Maria Lauber, Patric Raemy, Regula Hänggli and Manuel Puppis
    • Duration: November 2015 to October 2018
    • Funding: Swiss National Science Foundation

Journalistic Role Performance Around the Globe (JRP) is a comparative research project which addresses this disconnection between ideals and practice in journalism, analyzing how different dimensions of professional roles materialize in the news product. The main objective of the project is to compare journalistic role performance crossnationally, understanding the influence that different media systems have on the practice of journalism, as well as the gap between role conceptions and professional practice. Specifically, this study connects the characteristics of different professional role conceptions that have been theoretically and empirically operationalized and validated in comparative contexts (that is journalists understanding of what role they should play in society), with the study of news production (the visibility of such a role in news content).

  • The "Mediated Social Communication" Approach (Vermittlungstheoretischer Ansatz, VTA)
    • Project team: Philomen Schönhagen, Silke Fürst, Antonia Baumgartner, Stefan Bosshart
    • Duration: since 2012
    • Funding: own resources

The aim of the project is to enrich the mediated social communication (MSC) approach, an early discursive theory that sketches the many-to-many structure and interactive nature of mass communication. Interactivity in this sense is not realised by the expression of every single individual but by the exchange of statements between the representatives of diverse groups in society. Journalism mediates this communication by providing a concentrated overview of the ongoing social discourse. Thus, journalists are generally conceived as mediators and forum leaders. Interestingly, the mediating function of journalism is supported by a growing body of research that is rooted in the theory of the public sphere and in theories of news selection. This research reveals that news is mainly about various social groups debating and expressing themselves in public.

These insights, however, have been far from integrated into textbooks of mass communication. Instead, textbooks claim that mass communication is “inevitably one-directional, one-sided and impersonal” (McQuail, 2010, p. 57). In general, mass communication models centre either on journalistic sources, news decisions and the gatekeeping role of journalists, or on audience reception, choices and effects. In contrast, the MSC approach is specifically aimed at comprising the role of sources, journalists, receivers and addressees. It theorises communication and mediation processes as well as the significance of journalism for the development of societies. The approach was originally developed in mass communication research (Groth 1960; Wagner 1977, 1978) but is barely recognised internationally.

There is thus a contradiction between the theory of the public sphere and predominant ideas of mass communication. The project aims to overcome this contradiction. Furthermore, the MSC approach is further developed against the background of current research.

  • Integrative Analysis of Swiss Media Quality

The quality of the news media is in terminal decline; it is going through a prolonged crisis of confidence - such statements of doom and gloom can be heard everywhere these days. And with the rise of the internet and fundamental structural changes in the media landscape resulting in loss of revenue and cost-cutting measures, a vicious cycle of reduced resource and lower journalistic standards can take hold. This project pursues a multi-method, longitudinal approach to evaluating news media quality. We distinguish four dimensions of media quality: relevance, diversity, contextualization, and professionalism. These dimensions serve as common ground to develop and operationalize coding schemes for a content analysis as well as a survey with questionnaire items that match with each other. We evaluate the media quality biennially, allowing us to compare the results with each other and analyze the structural transformation processes over time.

    • Projektteam: Prof. Dr. Philomen Schönhagen, Prof. Dr. Dominique Bourgeois, Brigitte Hofstetter, lic. rer. soc.
    • Laufzeit: 2011-2014
