Advanced Course on Governance and Human Security, Myanmar

On December 10 and 11, 2019, in Kalaw (Myanmar), under the auspices of the Swiss embassy represented by Mr. Thomas Meier, Nicolas Schmitt participated to the « Advanced Course on Governance and Human security ». He gave two days lectures on good governance and peacekeeping, focusing on the role federalism and decentralization can play in the process.

Switzerland aims to support Myanmar’s path to peace, democracy and inclusive economic and social development. Addressing the root causes of political, social and economic conflicts is a precondition to move towards “out of fragility” and sustainable development. Switzerland supports the peace process and works “on the conflict” along the development, humanitarian and peace nexus, especially in cease-fire areas, where tangible benefits are key for actors to remain committed to peace. Fostering capacities among civil servants, civil society representatives, rebel organizations and the military to engage in democratization reforms is an important building block to support Myanmar in its transition to democracy.
