Matthias Lehmann is a professor of Private Law, Private International and Comparative Law at the University of Vienna, as well as a Professor of European and Comparative Business Law at Radboud University Nijmegen. He has studied in Jena, Paris, and New York. He holds two doctoral degrees, one from the University of Jena and one from Columbia University, and has written a habilitation (second thesis) at the University of Bayreuth.

His main interests lie in private international law, comparative law, dispute resolution, as well as banking and financial law. He has extensively published on these subjects in English, German, French and Spanish in internationally renowned journals, and has written and edited various books. Matthias is regularly a guest professor at the Sorbonne University (France), the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and the Universidad Pablo de Olavide (Spain). He has taught courses on comparative law and a special course on the crypto economy at the Hague Academy of International Law.

Matthias is a member of the Council of the European Law Institute (ELI), the American Law Institute (ALI), the Academia Europaea (AE), the Academic Board of the European Banking Institute (EBI), of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL), and of the Association Henri Capitant. He has been visiting Oxford University, LSE, Stanford University, and the National University of Singapore. Matthias has participated in the European Commission’s Expert Group on Conflict of Laws Regarding Securities and Claims as well as various UNIDROIT Working Groups, inter alia on Digital Assets and Private Law.
