Studying Law in China

We offer the unique opportunity to study at the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) in Shanghai, the economic hotspot of the People's Republic of China.

The university, founded in 1952, is the largest and most prestigious law school in the East China region. While specialized in legal education, ECUPL also offers programs in economics, foreign languages and management. The university currently has a student population of more than 10,000 including students of graduate, undergraduate, and adult programs.

  • Language Skills
    Program taught in English – International Economic Law

    The program is intended for non-Chinese citizens committed to career of legal practices in international investment, international trade and relevant Chinese Laws. It mainly focuses on international law, economic law in China and Chinese legal practices, in order to promote the students’ abilities to deal with legal issues concerning trade and investment in China.

    Courses offered in English during the autumn semester (subject to change)

    Law of Contract, WTO Legal System, Chinese Legal System, Chinese Company Law and Security Law, Civil Law, Chinese Culture and Legal Culture, Basic Chinese

    Courses offered in English during the spring semester (subject to change),

    Intellectual Property Law in China, International Trade Law, Judicial System in China, International Investment Law, International Civil Litigation and Commercial Arbitration, Legal Chinese, Chinese Society and Economy.

    Chinese language program

    The program provides students, no matter beginners or student with limited knowledge of Chinese, with a systematic study of general Chinese, professional Chinese, Chinese culture, cross-cultural communication.

  • Important Information
    Selection

    Five places per year, based on the principle of reciprocity, are available. Students from the whole University may apply. At the University of Fribourg, a first selection will be made by the convention co-ordinator. A definitive selection will then be made by the ECUPL.

    Tuition fees

    The students remain registered at the University of Fribourg during the abroad study period. They pay their regular tuition fees at the University of Fribourg. They are exempted from paying tuition fees at the host institution.

    Recognition

    The recognition principles decreed by the Equivalence Committee of the Faculty of Law apply for the recognition of the exams passed during the study period at the ECUPL.

    Application deadline: 31.10.2019 (for a stay during the academic year 2020/21) / 1 or 2 semesters)

    • Photocopy of all your academic results

  • Partnership with Chinese Universities

    We maintain contacts to several Chinese universities. These relations originate in a lecture tour by Prof. Hubert Stöckli in China and include the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL) in Shanghai as well as the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) and the Beijing Universitiy of Chemical Technolgy, both located in Beijing.

  • Sino-schweizerischer Zivilrechts-Dialog zum 100-jährigen Bestehen des Schweizerischen Obligationenrechts

    Zum 100-jährigen Bestehen des Schweizerischen Obligationenrechts luden Prof. Dr. Sun, Direktor am Institute of Law der Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) in Beijing (Volksrepublik China), und Prof. Hubert Stöckli, Rechtswissenschaftliche Fakultät der Universität Freiburg (Schweiz), zu einem Kolloquium am 27. und 28. Oktober 2012 für Fachleute aus Rechtspolitik, Rechtswissenschaften und Rechtspraxis (Richter, Anwälte, Beamte), aber auch für Studentinnen und Studenten. Unterstützt wurde der erfreulich gut besuchte Anlass vom Bundesamt für Justiz, von der Schweizer Botschaft in Beijing, der Ecoscientia Stiftung und der Homburger AG, die zudem mit zwei Referenten vertreten war. Das Kolloquium war bereichernd und von angeregten und lehrreichen Diskussionen geprägt.
