Pain perception

Pain is a major public health challenge and the large number of analgesic drugs does not prevent from the high treatment failure rate noticed. A mechanism-based classification of pain could probably help improving treatment efficiency. Several neurotransmitters are involved in nociception including GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid), the major brain inhibitory neurotransmitter, which plays a critical role at different pain processing steps. Since brain GABAergic activity could be reliably measured by EEG β oscillations, our aim is to find an EEG biomarker of the GABAergic component of pain.
