English Philology

Die Englische Philologie beschäftigt sich mit den Sprachen Alt- und Mittelenglisch und ihren hauptsächlichen literarischen Vertretern. Die Gesamtheit der altenglischen Poesie ist dabei regelmässiges Studienobjekt. Bei der Beschäftigung mit dem Mittelenglischen geht es ebenfalls um die Poesie, aber auch um Theaterstücke, wie Mysterienspiele oder Moralitäten, die für viele Forscher die Grundlage des zukünftigen Renaissance-Theaters repräsentieren. Alle Werke von Chaucer, beginnend mit seinen Übersetzungen bis zu seinen persönlicheren Werken sind Gegenstand des Studiums in unserem Departement.

 

Die kulturelle Verbreitung der Werke von Chaucer, ihre Verbindung mit der klassischen griechischen und lateinischen Literatur und Philosophie, ebenso wie die Verbindungen mit europäischen (v. a. französischen und italienischen) Werken stehen hauptsächlichen im Fokus unserer mediävistischen anglistischen Studien. Eine diachronische Einführung der zwei hauptsächlichen Sprachen ist Bestandteil unserer Vorlesungen, aber der Akzent liegt im Wesentlichen auf der Interpretation der Texte. Dabei soll der Geist der Intertextualität bewahrt werden, der im englischen Mittelalter sehr präsent war. Dieser äusserte sich einerseits, wie im Übrigen bei allen kontinentalen Literaturen, durch die starke Hinwendung an den Troia-Stoff. Andererseits äussert er sich aber auch durch eine Art literarischer Sonderfall, der eher nach deutschem Muster, anonyme Texte von grosser Qualität erzeugte, wie „Sir Gawain und der Grüne Ritter“ und „Sir Orfeo“ oder Texten von Autoren wie Henryson oder Malroy im 15. Jahrhundert.

 

In der Übergangsepoche, die uns beschäftigt, waren das Lateinisch und das Französische noch sehr präsent. Das erstere war wichtig für die Kirche und die Administration, das zweite für den Hof. Folglich sind die Dokumente, die uns in mittelenglischer Sprache überliefert sind mehrheitlich literarischer Art. Da die nordischen Völker, die sich im Vereinigten Königreich niedergelassen haben, ihre eigenen Sprachen mitbrachten, haben sie auch einen starken Einfluss auf das Mittelenglisch ausgeübt, v. a. im Bereich der englischen Rechtssprechung, die ebenfalls stark durch diese sprachlichen Einflüsse geprägt war. Durch den vorgegebenen kulturellen Reichtum der Rezeption dieser Texte, werden die sozialen, politischen und religiösen Einflüsse im Unterricht ebenfalls erschlossen. Jedes Semester vertiefen sich aufs Neue eine Vielzahl von Studierenden in das Studium dieser Texte.
