Kunstgeschichte des Mittelalters

Das Studium der mittelalterlichen Kunstgeschichte umfasst grundsätzlich alle Kunstgattungen im geographischen Bereich der europäischen und mediterranen Länder vom Ende der Spätantike bis zum Ende des Mittelalters. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die künstlerischen und kulturellen Beziehungen zwischen Westeuropa, Byzanz und dem Islam. Es ist ein Anliegen der Fachvertreter, die Kunst des Mittelalters besonders aus dem Gesichtspunkt des Publikums als Ausdruck religiöser Erfahrung zu betrachten und die Aufmerksamkeit auf Strategien des Bildraumes zu lenken, die dazu dienten, das Gefühl der Heiligkeit in Bezug auf heilige Orte, Objekte und Bilder auszudrücken.
