Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES): this is the ultimate technique to access the momentum-resolved electronic structure of materials. Using the photoelectric effect, photons of energy higher than the sample work function (-> 5 eV) excite electrons out of matter, the kinetic and trajectory of which are then analyzed to reconstruct the electronic structure of the probed material. We are developing a femtosecond laser system (based on a Pharos laser, see picture below) to perform time-resolved pump-probe ARPES at the University of Fribourg. A variable probe photon energy up to 6.4 eV will be generated and a tunable pump photon energy between 0.3 and 3 eV is available.
