Professor Victor Stoichita has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.


Professor Victor Stoichita, Department of Art History and Archeology at the University of Fribourg, has been elected as a Foreign Member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. This honorable nomination was approved by the president of the Republic of Poland.

The Nomination was based on the publication of two books by Prof Stoichita: “The Self-aware image” and “Short History of the Shadow”  Both books were translated into Polish in recent years and were well received by the academic public.

Prof Stoichita has served as an ordinary professor of Modern Art History at the University of Fribourg, as of 1991. Since then he has held the Louvre Chair (2014), the Francqui International Chair (Belgium 2015), the Erwin Panofsky Chair at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschte in Munich (2016) and lately was appointed as European Chair 2017/2018 of the Collége de France.  Prof  Stoichita is also a member of Academia Europaea, an associate member of the Royal Academy of Belgium and a foreign member of the Accademia dei Lincei.
