Prof. Moritz Tannast joined the Faculty of Science and Medicine in March 2019. Learn more about his work, passion, and objectives at our Faculty.

1.    What is your research/clinical focus?

Prof. Tannast: "My clinical focus comprises the entire spectrum of hip and pelvic surgery. This includes modern techniques of joint-preserving hip surgery in young adults, minimally-invasive total hip arthroplasty, revision hip arthroplasty, and all fractures of the hip and the pelvis.

My main research focus is the development and treatment of early hip osteoarthritis. This comprises all sort of scientific approaches ranging from experimental surgery to clinical evaluation studies. The goal of my research is directly related to practical questions regarding the evaluation and treatment of patients with hip problems that I see every day in clinic."

2.    What do you find particularly interesting/appealing about our Faculty?

Prof. Tannast: "The section of Medicine at the Faculty of Science and Medicine is a young and emerging section. The introduction of a new Master of Medicine is a great opportunity for both the University and the Hospital in Fribourg to position themselves nationally and internationally. The related challenges and commitments are particularly appealing."

3.    What do you wish to achieve here in Fribourg?

Prof. Tannast: "The first goal is to maintain the very high quality of clinical care of the Clinic of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Cantonal Hospital in Fribourg. It is one of nine so-called A1-Hospitals for Orthopaedic Surgery in Switzerland, the highest clinical rank according to the Swiss Medical Association FMH.

In addition, one of my main tasks is to further enlarge the academic activities at the Cantonal Hospital in Fribourg thereby bringing the clinical world and the scientific community closer together. This will include the clinical teaching of the new Master of Medicine students in Orthopaedic Surgery, the conduction of scientific studies in the orthopedic field and the recruitment of motivated students for a future academic career."

4.    What is your personal message or passion you would like to share with our students?

Prof. Tannast: "The Clinic of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology welcomes all students of the Section of Medicine and encourages them to perform their Master and Doctoral thesis at our Clinic."
