Residence permit

It is compulsory to follow the next steps upon your arrival in Fribourg!

1. Registration for the SPOMI (Service of Immigration)

The local authorities in charge of the migration request that each student and researcher who stays longer than 90 days in Fribourg apply for a Residence Permit. The application for the permit has to be submitted within the first 14 days upon arrival in Fribourg to the Service de la population et des migrant/Amt für Bevölkerung und Migration (SPOMI,  www.admin.fr.ch/spomi).

Please note that the Residence Permit does not allow the student or the researcher to remain longer than the dates for which it has been delivered. Fines can be applied in case of non-respect.

In case of an extension, justification is required  for a new  application of the residence permit  will have to be submitted, new fees will be charged.

  • STUDENTS EU /EFTA

    Request : Possibility to register by sending the application by postal mail.

    Validity : Equivalent to the duration of your stay. ATTENTION : choose the date of the end of your stay according with the end of your exams and/or if you would like to travel in Switzerland after the semester.Max. 1 year.

    Documents : Send by postal mail all the following documents:

    • Entry form of the SPOMI carefully completed and signed; the entry form is only available in French or German. Please contact us if you need help to fill it in.
    • 1 recent ID photo
    • 1 copy of your passport or identity card as well as 1 copy of the page with the visa if applicable AND 1 copy of the page where the stamp was made by the customs upon of your arrival in Switzerland. If possible copy in colours.
    • 1 original copy of the certificate of registration at the University of Fribourg

    Biometric data: You will receive an appointment for the capture of biometric data.

    Payment : You will receive the invoice and you can pay with a payment slip or via e-banking.

    Tax : The Residence Permit costs CHF 102.70.

    Reception of the permit : The residence permit in credit card format will be sent to your home address in Fribourg by postal mail after 5-10 days.

     

    EU /EFTA : EU = European Union / EFTA = European Free Trade Association (including: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland)

     

  • STUDENTS NON EU/EFTA

    Request : Possibility to register by sending the application by postal mail.

    Validity : Equivalent to the duration of your stay. ATTENTION : choose the date of the end of your stay according with the end of your exams and/or if you would like to travel in Switzerland after the semester.Max. 1 year.

    Documents : Send by postal mail the following documents:

    • Entry form of the SPOMI carefully completed and signed; the entry form is only available in French or German. Please contact us if you need help to fill it in.
    • 1 recent ID photo
    • 1 copy of your passport or identity card as well as 1 copy of the page with the visa if applicable AND 1 copy of the page where the stamp was made by the customs upon of your arrival in Switzerland. If possible copy in colours.
    • 1 original copy of the certificate of registration at the University of Fribourg
    • Learning agreement, duration of studies and plans after graduation
    • Proof of your financial means: Confirmation from a bank authorised in Switzerland of sufficient assets - 21,900 Swiss francs - /or sufficient scholarship or educational loan /or declaration of commitment from a solvent person resident in Switzerland (fill in the form "Déclaration d’engagement en vue d’études").

    Reception of the permit : The residence permit in credit card format will be sent to your address in Fribourg by postal mail after 5-10 days.

2. Registration with your municipality of residence

Obligation to register with your municipality of residence during your stay.

Here is the procedure:

  • Go to the municipality office
  • Show your Residence Permit
  • Show the proof of your health insurance (COPY)
  • Show the lease agreement of your apartment (COPY)
  • Pay the fee (approximately CHF 20.-)
