Beschreibung	This seminar is interested in discovering the significance of music—both classical and popular—in key American novels. How can music be described in fiction?  What intermedial relationships are activated? How are classic American topics and conflicts represented when refracted through music?  Our key texts will be the following: Willa Cather, The Song of the Lark (1915) Richard Powers, The Time of Our Singing (2002) Rick Bass, Nashville Chrome (2010) Ann Patchett, Bel Canto (2001) We will engage theoretical work ranging from Lessing and Adorno to contemporary scholars such as  Werner Wolf, Philipp Schweighauser, Barbara Straumann, and Erik Redling.  If there is sufficient interest, we may, of course, look at other literary texts as well, ranging from Harold Frederic's The Damnation of Theron Ware via Sherman Alexie's Reservation Blues to Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho.
