    Description

    In this lecture we will trace the multi-facetted and productive connection between literary texts and images in Modern English Literature. Focusing on examples dating from the 19th century to the present day, we will explore the numerous interactions that have defined text-image relationships. Based on theoretical frameworks provided by intermediality and media studies, we will analyze a wide variety of phenomena, such as ekphrasis, typographical experiments (e.g., pattern poems) and media combination. In addition, we will also study broader topics such as realism, modes of description or the relationship between literature and photography, for example. Thus, the specific text-image encounters we discuss will be placed within their historical and cultural contexts.

    • Students can give accounts of the diverse relationships between literature and visual media such as paintings or photographs.
    • Students can relate specific, media-bound aspects of literary texts to their historical and cultural contexts.
    • Students can identify and describe central theoretical concepts and approaches and apply these to literary texts.

    Bibliography

    All texts will be made available on Moodle. Regarding literary texts, we will mainly work with excerpts or shorter texts each week. There are no set long texts to be read in advance. Students curious to know which primary texts will be discussed can request a list early in September.
