    Description

Diversity of contents and services, ownership and control over digital goods, self-disclosure and surveillance, freedom of information - these topics continue to occupy the providers, users, and regulators of digital communication. From a media use perspective, they revolve around the questions of privacy and self-determination. But how do privacy and self-determination manifest themselves in everyday communicative contexts and practices? What do they mean for the users of netflix, instagram, Google Home, UberEats, or the iStore? Why do these users struggle to achieve privacy and self-determination, or even abandon them readily, and why and how might they be motivated and helped to achieve them anyway?
We will investigate these questions both theoretically and empirically, drawing on foundational texts as well as contemporary studies of digital communication and media use today.

    Training objectives

Familiarity with diverse basic conceptualization of privacy and self-disclosure in the humanities and social sciences.
Ability to apply these conceptualizations to concrete debates on contemporary or emerging communication technologies.
Ability to conceive of empirical investigations regarding privacy and self-determination and operationalize them regarding the use of different contemporary communication technologies.
