    Description

In this introductory course for 1st-year students, we will investigate the elaboration of meaning in context. Some philosophers of language have argued that language meaning is only determined by usage, but contrary to what a lay person may think, usage is governed by a number of parameters and principles which allows us to plan our linguistic behaviour and decode that of others. In this course, students will become acquainted with domains such as speech act theory, deixis and politeness theory. In the second half of the course, we will look into the complex mechanisms which allow us to pack simple utterances with more meaning than meets the eyes and how our addressee can unpack very rich interpretations (e.g. irony, metaphors, euphemisms, etc.) in seemingly effortless fashion.
