    Description

Global migration is higher now than at any time in history, generating political, economic, social, and cultural encounters and suggesting compelling questions for the education sector.  Particularly in light of the recent migration crisis in Europe (and concomitant “backlash”), in this course we will discuss theories of migration as well as related notions of assimilation, acculturation, adaptation and integration.  Specifically, we will question the responsibilities and identity morphing of institutions and individuals in migration contexts, with a conceptual focus on space/spatial relations.  Government bureaus, non-governmental organizations and schools will be considered in light of their roles in the integration process.  Students will actively engage with institutions and individuals in the field (Covid-permitting).

    Training objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to: 1) differentiate between immigrants and refugees; 2) articulate understanding of concepts such as assimilation, acculturation, integration, adaptation, conviviality, belonging, neighborliness, space.

Critically analyze institutional and educational approaches relevant to migrants and migrant families as well as host communities.
