    Description

    The constitution of the United States forbids the establishment of a national religion and the preference of one religion over another or of religion over non-religious philosophies in general. Hence, there is a long tradition of separating church from state, yet a powerful inclination to mix religion and politics. Throughout US history, great political and social movements – from abolition to women's suffrage to civil rights to pacifism to today's struggles over abortion and gay marriage – have drawn upon religious institutions for moral authority. Many analysts agree that in recent years, religion has been woven more deeply into US politics than ever before. According to polls the vast majority of Americans agrees that it is important for a president to have strong religious beliefs since the time of Eisenhower. The presidency of Donald Trump challenges the traditional religious bias of Democrat and Republican voters. The lecture will provide an outline of the complex historical and present relation of religion and politics in the Unites States considering the Christian churches as well as minorities (e.g. Nation of Islam) and counterculture (e.g. the hippie movement).

    2) Theoretical considerations of the relation between politics and religion / civil religion.
