    Description

    In this intro course intended for first year BA students, we look at the relationship between the English language and society. The goal of this lecture course is to allow first-year students to acquire a deeper understanding of how a language can be shaped by the society or community that speaks it. We will also discuss how social diversity can give rise to various varieties of English. Our survey will explore the relationship between English and social variables such as geography, socio-economic background, gender, age, ethnicity, etc.
