    Description

Represents an overview on developmental biology, a central organizing discipline in biology that relates cell- and molecular biology, anatomy, ecology, evolution and medicine to each other. The course provides the basic conceptual background of the anatomical, experimental, genetic, cellular, molecular and biotechnical approaches to modern developmental biology. It integrates the discussion of the early development of several important model organisms into concise units that detail cleavage, gastrulation and axis formation simultaneously. Expermimental approaches include classical genetics, complementation, RNA interference, CRISPR-mediated gene editing, transgenesis and more.

Training objectives This lecture is an introduction into some of the most popular animal model systems used for the study of development. These include Xenopus laevis, Mouse, Drosophila melanogaster, Caenorahbditis elegans and Zebrafish. Through this lecture, the student will understand the value of different technical approaches that are being used for the study of development. Further emphasis will be on presenting key experiments and results obtained with each system. Topics may vary from year to year but are likely to include transcriptional, translational, post-translational and epigenetic control of gene expression.
Comments Some lectures will be held in Bern, Institute of Cell Biology, Baltzerstrasse 4, Room C161
Some lectures will be given in Fribourg, Plant Biology, Rte Albert-Gockel 3, Lecture room 0.109

The first seven weeks of the semester are in Fribourg.

A detailed schedule will be distributed at the beginning of the lecture series.
