Language Learning Classroom 1: Autumn Session BAS1: Module 03: Language learning: Instruction and Assessment This two part foundation course is intended for students planning on teaching English in Swiss state schools at Secondary I level. The autumn session will provide you with an introduction to the worldwide community of English Language Teaching (ELT) and its professional discourse, different methodologies and theories of language learning and roles of the teacher. You will start to build your base of practical teaching ideas and approaches. We will look at the effective use of classroom language and explore the current debate for using the L1 vs. the target language in the classroom as well as the pros and cons of technology. [The complementary course offered in the spring (Language Learning Classroom II) covers testing, error correction and feedback, task-based learning, course book evaluation and the use of self-designed materials to supplement course book material.] Engagement: Your level of engagement in this course will be reflected in the quality and timeliness of your assignments, the attention and effort put into pre-lesson preparation (homework readings, workshop preparation, etc.), regular attendance and active participation.
