    Description

The short story is a versatile literary genre which has thrived since the 19th century in the English-speaking world and beyond. In this proseminar we will focus on this genre in order to explore perennial topics such as relationships, love and the family, but also more contemporary issues related to e.g., environmental crisis, migration, Brexit or digitization. We will discuss the short story from a theoretical angle and study its history before turning to selected examples by authors such as Zadie Smith, A. L. Kennedy, Ali Smith, William Boyd and Bernardine Evaristo.

    Objectifs de formation

At the end of the seminar students will

    • Be able to situate the short story within the development of English literature.
    • Be able to give persuasive accounts of short stories both orally and in writing.
    • Have improved their analytical skills and their ability to connect literary works to their cultural contexts.

    Documents

    Bibliographie

Short stories and other material will be made available on Moodle. We will draw upon The Penguin Book of the Contemporary British Short Story (ed. Philip Hensher. London: Penguin, 2018) a lot, but not exclusively. If students wish to have a book to hold on to, this would be a good start!
