Language Learning Classroom 1: Autumn Session
BAS1: Module 03: Language learning: Instruction and Assessment
This course starts on Tuesday, Sept 17th
This two part foundation course is intended for students planning on teaching English in Swiss state schools at Secondary I level. The autumn session will provide you with an introduction to the worldwide community of English Language Teaching (ELT) and its professional discourse, different methodologies and theories of language learning and roles of the teacher. We will also examine background issues related to English language learning in the classroom including motivational factors, student autonomy and classroom discipline. You will start to build your base of practical teaching ideas and approaches for teaching different language skills. We will look at the effective use of classroom language and explore the current debate for using the L1 vs. the target language in the classroom. [The complementary course offered in the spring (Language Learning Classroom II) covers testing, error correction and feedback, task-based learning and the use of self-designed materials to supplement course book material.]
