The seminar aims to give an overview of concepts and topics, which are relevant in psychological practice with sexual minority clients. Several studies have shown that individuals with a lesbian, gay, bisexual or other non-heterosexual identity are at higher risk for mental health problems and suicidality. This link has also been shown for young men in Switzerland (Wang et al., 2013). One possible framework to understand these findings is the minority stress model (Meyer, 2003): Being part of a minority group is related to accumulated stressors (such as prejudice and discrimination), while adaptive coping strategies and/or social support buffer these effects on mental health. We will also reflect developmental challenges in the light of sexual minority individuals such as youth, identity, romantic relationships, and parenthood.
