Description The term media landscape refers to the distinctive features of the media in any given country. But how can we explain differences and similarities between different media landscapes? How can we explain the quality of TV programs or newspapers we watch and read? How can we explain the fact that only very few successful private television stations exist in small states like Switzerland but so many strong TV companies in bigger neighboring countries? To modify Bill Clinton’s famous dictum: “It’s the structures, stupid!”. Media structures go a long way towards explaining media performance. Comparative analyses of media landscapes are essential to better understand the conditions under which media content is produced. This lecture serves as an introduction and immersion into comparative media and communication research. It not only offers an overview of comparatives approaches in various research fields but also focuses on research in different world regions.
